The choice you make when it comes to the point of view in your story determines how much interest you shall generate in your readers. This is important especially if you wish for them to keep reading your works of fiction. The point of view dictates the tone of the book. The reader shall get a perspective from which they shall observe as the story as it unfolds. You are thus better off knowing what points of view you have at your disposal in telling your stories. You need to also understand more about shifts in these point of view.

You shall hear of the first person point of view, through which a story is told using the character’s emotions, senses and internal thoughts. There is an application of specific pronouns and verbs. You will notice the use of the pronoun I quite a lot. The verbs will all be in present tense.

The a second-person point of view, on the other hand, relies on the pronoun You a lot. This gives readers a challenge in getting into the groove of the story, since there is the feeling of distance between the story and them.

In the third person point of view, the pronouns He and She get used often. Only the past tense is applicable here. When it is used alone it shall be easy for the readers to feel detached. This can be seen where you get all our information through the author’s eyes, with little coming from the character.

In the third person limited point of view, there is a bit of the third person, and a bit of the first person. The author will therefore rely on the first person’s five senses, emotions and internal thoughts to tell the story from their perspective. In this style, the author’s narration gets its meat and juice through the main characters; view of the world.

There is also the idea of shifting points of view, which acts as a magical perspective. It has the capability of revealing the emotions, thoughts, and five senses of anyone who sees through it. It can take a sort of aerial view of the proceedings as a party, for example. You get to see different people having a nice time. Then something tragic happens, where a person has a seizure and collapses. We then see the main character, a police officer near the party, rush to the scene. We now take their point of view in the following moments. We get to understand how they have taken the tragedy. We can see their determination to get to the bottom of it. Such shifts are impotent when telling of fictional works. We get a deeper level of understanding through them.
