Indiana Jones 5 time travel twist teased in set photo

Indiana Jones 5 looks set to take Harrison Ford’s iconic adventurer back in time.

Thanks to a new photo snapped from the set, fans have been gifted a glimpse of a mysterious scene involving Roman soldiers, which suggests we might be heading back a couple of thousand years for part of the movie.

The photo hints at a theory that time travel will be part of the plot, with suggestions that Indy is looking for an artefact that could actually power a time machine.

Alternatively, the presence of Roman soldiers could mean that this is a flashback scene. All will be revealed, but in the meantime, check them out in all their sword and spear-swinging glory below.

It comes as the film’s release date has been delayed by almost a year, moving from its previous scheduled launch of July 29, 2022 to its new date of June 30, 2023.

Director James Mangold (Logan) has addressed the criticism being aimed at the fifth Indiana Jones, with fans not only concerned about Ford’s age but also the lack of Steven Spielberg.

“I understand wariness, I live it. I don’t know if I’ll make you happy but my team and I will knock ourselves out trying to make something good,” Mangold wrote on Twitter.

“We admire the craft of the originals. I hope when you see real images, they’ll look better to you than paparazzi shots from bushes.

“Maybe, just maybe, I won’t let you down. I cherish old Hollywood pictures. Give me a little air to make the film. Then make your judgements, okay?”

Alongside Ford, who last wore the fedora hat in 2008’s widely-derided Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, we can look forward to the acting talents of Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther), Thomas Kretschmann (Westworld), Toby Jones (What If…?) and Boyd Holbrook (Beckett).

As for the evildoers Indy’s up against, it was teased earlier this year that the Nazis will be making an appearance in the movie.

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled for release on June 30, 2023.
